Florida Authority Network Publishes Ten-Part Investigative Series on Florida’s Technology Economy, Introducing an AI-Assisted “Composite Journalism” Model

Tampa Bay publisher Brian B. French releases more than 34,000 words of sourced long-form analysis โ€” free, without paywall or advertising โ€” on the state’s data center buildout, Space Coast economy, and technology infrastructure

TAMPA BAY, Fla. โ€” August 1, 2026 โ€” Florida Technology News, part of the Florida Authority Network, has published a ten-article investigative series examining Florida’s technology economy, introducing what publisher Brian B. French calls “composite journalism” โ€” comprehensive long-form explanatory reporting assembled from fragmented primary sources using AI-assisted research, published free of charge and without advertising.

The series, released over eleven days, totals more than 34,000 words across ten articles averaging 3,400 words each. Every article carries full source citations, links to primary documents including state statutes and administrative code, and published verification notes identifying claims that remain single-sourced or unconfirmed.

Subjects include Florida’s unmeasured tier of data centers falling below the state’s 50-megawatt regulatory threshold; the gap between the volume of satellite data the Space Coast launches and the volume Florida processes on the ground; two decades of electric grid hardening that outside capital has not repriced; the state’s concentration of older adults as an untapped advantage in longevity technology; Miami’s subsea cable interconnection position; the fragmentation of Florida’s regional technology ecosystems; the pattern of Florida technology companies exiting to out-of-state acquirers; the water permitting regime governing data center siting; and the wave of county-level data center moratoriums now underway across the state.

A publishing model built for how audiences now find information

French, a former institutional portfolio manager who spent more than 25 years in financial services before moving into digital strategy, said the model responds to a structural gap in regional business coverage rather than competing with existing newsrooms.

“Florida’s newsrooms produce excellent short reporting they have no economic room to expand,” French said. “A reporter filing several times a week cannot spend three days on one story, and an advertising model built on page impressions rewards page count rather than page depth. So the 600-word version gets written, it is accurate, and the comprehensive version simply does not exist. That vacuum is what this series set out to fill.”

The approach reflects broad changes in how news is produced and consumed. According to Muck Rack’s State of Journalism 2026, which surveyed approximately 900 working journalists in March, 82 percent already use AI tools regularly. Reuters Institute research has found weekly AI usage among general news audiences nearly doubled in a single year, rising from 18 percent to 34 percent.

French said AI is used in the Florida Authority Network’s editorial process for research retrieval, document review, and cross-referencing โ€” not for writing.

“What these tools changed is not the writing. It is the four hours of work that surround the writing,” French said. “On one article I went through five water management districts’ rules, sections of the Florida Administrative Code, and an agency applicant handbook to find a single clause stating that a water permit shall be revoked if it interferes with pre-existing users. That clause turns water from an environmental objection into a credit consideration. Ten years ago finding it would have taken a research assistant a week, and no regional publication would have funded the week.”

Free and advertising-free as a distribution strategy

Florida Technology News publishes without a paywall or advertising, a decision French describes as driven by how AI answer engines retrieve and cite sources rather than by editorial philosophy.

Research released in July 2026 by 5WPR and Everything-PR reported that seven major paywalled newsrooms captured zero citations across a 40-query test of AI-generated answers, while open-web publishers captured 91.3 percent. Industry analysts attribute the gap to structural barriers including hard paywalls, bot challenges, and advertising scripts that impede content extraction.

“An ad stack introduces consent walls, injected scripts, page reflow, and anti-bot protections,” French said. “Every one of those exists for a defensible commercial reason, and collectively they function as a tax on being found. Removing them produces a faster page for readers and a document a retrieval system can actually read.”

Complementary to regional newsrooms, not a replacement

French was direct that the model depends on primary reporting his network does not produce.

“Every article in this series rests on work someone else did first โ€” a reporter sitting through a county commission meeting, a journalist reading a utility rate filing closely enough to notice a single disclosure,” French said. “Florida’s regional newsrooms retain the staffing, standing and legal capacity to do that work. We do not, and we are not built to. They report; we explain. Every citation and link we publish sends readers back toward the reporters who earned it.”

Northwestern University’s Medill Local News Initiative reported 213 U.S. news desert counties in its 2025 State of Local News study, with another 1,524 counties down to a single remaining news source. The same research found more than 300 local news startups launched over the preceding five years, 80 percent of them digital-only.
