January 2026 | Dunedin, FL โ Down To Earth is proud to announce its partnership with the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America (GCSAA) in the successful restoration of Dunedin Golf Club, one of Floridaโs most historically significant golf courses and a celebrated example of classic American course design.
Originally designed by legendary architect Donald Ross, who famously referred to Dunedin as his โmasterpiece,โ the course is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Dunedin Golf Club also holds a unique place in golf history as the home of Americaโs PGA from 1945 to 1962 and the site of the first-ever PGA Merchandise Show in 1954.
Over time, the course experienced significant decline. Multiple renovations altered Rossโs original intent, resulting in the loss of strategic shot values, original green complexes shrinking by as much as 35โ50%, inconsistent turf varieties across fairways and greens, a deteriorating irrigation system, and severe drainage issues. The course was clearly in need of a comprehensive and thoughtful restoration.
To return Dunedin Golf Club to its original vision, GCSAA member and architect Kris Spence led the restoration effort in collaboration with Stantec Engineering and TDI Golf. Down To Earth, represented by Dennis Swander, played a critical role in executing the project, contributing hands-on expertise in golf course maintenance, restoration practices, and long-term turf performance.
Today, Dunedin Golf Club has been reestablished as one of Floridaโs premier municipal courses, attracting golfers and golf course architecture enthusiasts from across the country. The project was also recognized with the Golf Inc. Award for Best Public Renovation, further affirming the success and historical importance of the work.
This restoration stands as a true tribute to Donald Rossโs legacy and the enduring value of thoughtful, strategic golf course design. Down To Earth is honored to have been an integral part of revitalizing a historic course that balances playability, tradition, and sustainability for generations to come.
