FORT LAUDERDALE, FL — In an era when local newsrooms are closing at an alarming rate and corporate consolidation is silencing the voices that once held government, politicians, and powerful institutions accountable, Florida Bulldog stands as a critical beacon of independent, nonprofit, nonpartisan investigative journalism serving South Florida and the entire state. Founded in 2009 by award-winning investigative reporter Dan Christensen, Florida Bulldog — formally known as Broward Bulldog, Inc. — has spent more than fifteen years doing what too few news organizations dare to do: pursue the truth wherever it leads, publish stories that powerful people would prefer remain hidden, and deliver watchdog journalism that serves the public interest rather than the bottom line.

Today, Florida Bulldog proudly announces its continued mission, celebrates its growing impact, and extends a heartfelt, urgent invitation to residents, foundations, and civic-minded organizations across Florida to support the work that keeps democracy healthy — through a fully tax-deductible donation to Broward Bulldog, Inc., a federally recognized 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization.

Mission Statement

Florida Bulldog’s mission is to provide authoritative, issue-oriented, and investigative journalism in the public interest. The organization exists to deliver fact-based, deeply reported news coverage of government, politics, the courts, education, business, the environment, health, and public safety — to the people of South Florida and beyond — without the influence of advertisers, political donors, or corporate ownership.

In the organization’s own words: “Florida Bulldog delivers fact-based watchdog reporting as a public service that is essential to a free and democratic society. We are nonprofit, independent, nonpartisan, experienced. No fake news here.”

Florida Bulldog upholds the Code of Ethics of the Society of Professional Journalists and operates under a rigorous financial conflict-of-interest policy approved by its board of directors. The organization is a proud member of the Investigative News Network — a national collaboration of nonprofit journalism organizations that conduct investigative reporting in the public interest, a distinction earned only by organizations meeting the highest operational and reporting standards.

Organizational Goals

Florida Bulldog pursues a defined set of institutional goals that guide every editorial decision and every story published on its platform:

Accountability Journalism: To investigate and expose corruption, misconduct, and abuse of power in Florida’s government, law enforcement, courts, and public institutions — holding officials accountable to the citizens they serve.

Public Interest Reporting: To provide thorough, accurate, and fair coverage of issues that affect the daily lives of South Florida residents, with particular emphasis on stories that other news organizations overlook or decline to pursue.

Strengthening Democracy: To contribute to an informed electorate by ensuring that critical information about the actions of government officials, judicial decisions, business practices, and environmental and public safety matters reaches the public in a timely, accessible way.

Journalistic Excellence: To maintain the highest standards of professional journalism, employing veteran reporters with decades of experience at major news organizations including The Miami Herald, the South Florida Sun-Sentinel, the Daily Business Review, CBS4 News, and more.

Financial Independence: To sustain a free, independent press by operating through the support of individuals, foundations, and civic-minded businesses — never compromising editorial integrity for advertising revenue or political favor.

Community Transparency: To model transparency in journalism through full disclosure of donors and funding sources, adherence to professional ethical codes, and active engagement with the communities being served.

Florida’s First Nonprofit Regional News Organization

Florida Bulldog holds the distinction of being Florida’s first nonprofit regional news site staffed entirely by veteran, professional journalists. The organization was built from the ground up by Dan Christensen, whose investigative career spans decades and includes landmark reporting that produced real-world change.

Christensen’s reporting led to a federal corruption investigation that sent Broward Sheriff Ken Jenne to prison in 2007. His coverage of hidden court cases and falsified court records resulted in unanimous Florida Supreme Court decisions in 2007 and 2010 that outlawed those practices statewide. His reporting on a deadly gun-planting conspiracy by Miami police led to the indictment of more than a dozen officers and the establishment of Miami’s civilian review panel. The executive director of the Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press named him the nation’s leading journalist on court secrecy and First Amendment issues.

Florida Bulldog’s Board of Advisors includes bestselling crime novelist Michael Connelly, former Miami Herald executive editor Tom Fiedler, Knight Chair in Investigative and Enterprise Reporting Brant Houston, and leading media law attorneys and journalism educators. The organization’s board of directors is chaired by South Florida businessman Jay Alexander.

Florida Bulldog has also pursued one of the most consequential public-interest legal battles in the state’s recent history: a Freedom of Information Act lawsuit filed September 5, 2012 against the Department of Justice and the FBI, seeking records related to a Saudi family in Sarasota and their possible connections to the 9/11 hijackers — a story of national and historic significance that Florida Bulldog has reported on exclusively for over a decade.

Recent Investigations: Florida Bulldog in Action

The following three stories, drawn from Florida Bulldog’s most recent and most widely-read reporting, illustrate the breadth, depth, and public importance of the organization’s investigative journalism.

SaferWatch CEO’s Federal Bribery Arrest Sends Shockwaves Through Florida Law Enforcement and Schools

By Dan Christensen  |  FloridaBulldog.org  |  February 13, 2026

In one of the most consequential public safety stories to emerge from South Florida in recent years, Florida Bulldog broke the news of federal bribery charges brought in New York against the owner and CEO of SaferWatch — the company whose widely-used panic button and emergency mass alert system has become standard equipment for police departments, school districts, and public officials across Florida.

The arrest sent immediate shockwaves through law enforcement agencies in Broward, Miami-Dade, and Palm Beach counties, where the company’s technology is deeply embedded in emergency response infrastructure. Florida Bulldog’s reporting revealed that sheriffs, police chiefs, and school administrators were scrambling to assess the implications of the arrest for their agencies, their contracts, and the continued operation of critical emergency alert systems that Florida residents and schoolchildren depend on for their safety.

The story raises profound questions about the vetting process for government technology vendors, the potential vulnerability of public safety communications infrastructure, and the accountability of companies holding lucrative contracts with Florida’s most important public institutions. This is precisely the kind of complex, multi-jurisdictional investigative story that only a dedicated watchdog newsroom has the time, expertise, and editorial independence to pursue.

Trump Campaign Spokesman Jason Miller Accused of Criminally Threatening a Miami-Dade Paternity Judge

By Francisco Alvarado  |  FloridaBulldog.org  |  February 16, 2026

In a story that generated more than 10,000 views in its first days of publication, Florida Bulldog broke the news that Jason Miller — the Washington D.C.-based lobbyist and longtime spokesman for Donald Trump’s presidential campaigns — stands accused of criminally threatening a state court judge who was presiding over his paternity case in Miami-Dade County. The judge subsequently stepped down from the case following the alleged threats.

The story represents a striking intersection of national politics, Florida’s state court system, and the troubling conduct of a figure who has wielded enormous influence in the highest levels of American political power. Florida Bulldog’s reporting documents the accusations in detail, raising serious questions about judicial intimidation, the rule of law, and whether political operatives with connections to the White House are held to the same legal standards as ordinary Floridians.

The case highlights the essential role that independent watchdog journalism plays in documenting the actions of powerful public figures within Florida’s court system — institutions meant to operate with transparency and fairness, but which can be vulnerable to the influence of individuals with political connections. Without Florida Bulldog’s reporting, this story might never have reached the public.

Investigation #3: Terror, Indifference, and Division — Why ICE Resistance Has Fractured in South Florida

By Noreen Marcus  |  FloridaBulldog.org  |  February 20, 2026

As immigration enforcement operations by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement intensified across the country in early 2026, Florida Bulldog published a deeply reported, on-the-ground examination of why organized resistance to ICE activity has been far more limited in South Florida than in cities like Minneapolis and Los Angeles, where protesters flooded streets and drew national attention to immigrant rights and community safety.

Reporter Noreen Marcus, drawing on interviews with insiders, advocates, and community members, reveals a complex picture of the forces shaping South Florida’s muted response: fear within immigrant communities, internal divisions among advocacy groups, political indifference among local leaders, and a broader climate that has made collective action difficult and, for many, dangerous. The story examines why a region with one of the most diverse and heavily immigrant-populated communities in the United States has not seen the same degree of organized pushback that other American cities have mounted.

This is the kind of nuanced, human-centered community reporting that requires trust, time, and deep journalistic expertise — exactly what Florida Bulldog’s experienced team brings to every story. As immigration policy continues to reshape lives across South Florida, this reporting provides residents with essential context they will not find anywhere else.
